  • Won a copy of DOK from Fists of Heaven, Installed it, and it wont run.

    Hi guys,

I was so elated when I got an email saying I had one a copy of Homeworld: DOK. The first two games defined my early adulthood.
I love the series and lore, and general mystery.

So I installed the game, and let it patch and went to work today.
I come home and I find out that the game wont run at all.
I'll click the desktop icon, and GOG pops up annoyingly, and the game tries to boot.
Only it doesnt. The screen goes fullscreen black, and then white, and then crashes.

I havent the slightest Idea what the problem is as I run games like Starcraft 2, and MWO with no problems at all.
I'm running windows 8.1, and I cannot update because the only update to be had is an actual upgrade to windows 10, which is something I cant do for fiscal reasons.

    Please help.
    Do you need a DXDiag?

DxDiag may help. Graphics drivers up to date?

Some people have been finding the GoG Galaxy overlay is causing a crash issue. Try closing or disabling the overlay to see if that helps.

Let us know if that helps.

    Cheers,

    Iain

          It did not.
I attempted to start the game without the overlay, and it pops up regardless, and I close it out and the game still crashes.

Can you share your output log? You should be able to find it on this file path:

            ~:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Homeworld Deserts of Kharak\DesertsOfKharak_Data\output_log

Have you posted a request for help on the GoG forums as well? If it is a GoG specific issue they may be better positioned to help you.

            Cheers,

            Iain

I deleted GOG galaxy and installed solo.
Same Issue. Not an issue with GOG apparently. I was hoping that it was the overlay.

              output log uploaded.
              I hope this helps.

                Ronnie,

GOG Galaxy is needed for DoK due to the multiplayer support. Can I suggest something? Disable GOG Overlay:
                1. Click on the "More" button in the GOG Galaxy
                2. Click on settings
                3. Then untick the box "In-game overlay"
Some people reported that this was an issue when playing GOG's version of DOK, try that out and let me know how it goes.

You can see on the log that the information is related to a plugin called GalaxyCSharp, I believe this is the GOG Galaxy plugin that interfaces with the overlay

As I stated before; I uninstalled GOG Galaxy, and installed the game by itself.
It isnt Galaxy, its the game. Something isnt meshing somewhere and not allowing the game to boot.

Now are you guys actually going to help me figure this out or are we going to continue pointing the finger at GOG?

                        Hello Ronnie,

Sorry for the slow response, we were out of office for the long weekend here in Canada.

From your log there seems to be an issue with the client loading the GalaxyCSharpGlue.dll. This file is exclusive to the GoG client; the GoG client for DoK was made by GoG and Gearbox, so unfortunately we don't have any insight as to why it is not loading on your system.

Did you have any luck posting on the GoG forums as suggested?

I will message Gearbox and see if they have any additional insight, that might be helpful in solving the problem.

                        Cheers,

                        Iain

                          @Ronnie,

I checked a few possible exceptions related to the GalaxyCSharpGlue.dll and it is possible that the issue is not gog itself, but your windows that is missing some files. As pointed out in this thread: https://brightrockgames.userecho.com...csharpgluedll/

Hello, Thanks for your quick answer!

I apologize for not giving sooner more insight, but yesterday evening I verified that I do have this DLL in the folder written in log (E:/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/War For The Overworld/WFTOGame_Data/Plugins/GalaxyCSharpGlue.dll); so I think the missing dll is another one, referenced by this assembly.

After some Googling, I found a person who described the same problem, here: https://www.gog.com/forum/offworld_t..._the_main_menu

This person claims that he resolved by reinstalling MS Visual C++ 2012 runtime. On my computer I have an almost clean installation of Windows 10 Professional, and I do have MS Visual C++ 2010, 2012 and 2015 runtimes.

Is it possible that I also need to do something about MS Visual C++ 2012 runtime?
which points out to this thread: https://www.gog.com/forum/offworld_t..._the_main_menu in which the player answered that reinstalling the MS Visual C++ 2012 runtime worked for him. Could you try that out?

Gearbox has being pursuing this issue with GoG Customer support on your behalf, here are some general trouble shooting tips that they suggest:

"Please ask the User is opening the Galaxy Client, clicking the game in the Library, clicking MORE > Settings and disabling "In-game overlay" makes a difference.

For troubleshooting I would suggest the following:
Please uninstallant the VC++ Redistributable 2012, 2013 and 2015 packages, restart your computer and install both the 64bit and 32bit version of these packages.

Reinstalling just the 2013 packages should be the first thing to try.

                            Here are links from Microsoft:
